This beautiful Atlantic Triton conch was photographed on the beach at Ocean City NJ. This shell is used by hermit crabs for protection and as a mobile home.
Atlantic Tritons or Charonia variegata is a species of predatory sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Charoniidae, the triton snails, triton shells, or tritons.
This species has a wide distribution and has been found in European waters, the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean along Cape Verde, off the Canary Islands, North West Africa, and Tanzania, in the Caribbean Sea and the , Gulf of Mexico and from North Carolina to eastern Brazil.
